A Matter of Perspective

Let’s say as an example, you decide you are going to make a movie. Your aim is to be the top of the box office list and most of your film profits will be made through people taking a trip to the cinema to watch your new show. You also want to make a lasting impression on everyone that does come to watch it. Bearing this in mind, would you choose a filming technology that optimises viewing through a box office cinema or through a home TV? A box office cinema, right? Exactly! Like most directors, you would choose your technology based on the cinematic experience and hope that everyone falls in love with your film at first watch.

 

Because of this, directors for movies usually prefer to shoot using a wider format lens in 2.35:1 aspect ratio, whereas most television productions are usually displayed on 16:9 format TV. This probably sounds like lots of unnecessary information, but it affects you too, probably without you even noticing! Have you ever wondered why some films have black or grey bars above and below the image that you’re watching on your TV? It is because the film was made using a 2.35:1 lens and you are watching on a 16:9 TV. Similarly, if you have the same dark lines vertically down the sides of the image, this is because you are probably watching a film made using a 16:9 lens on a wider format screen.

 

The question that we need to ask is which do you prefer? Would you prefer a more fitting screen for your image? There is no right or wrong way to display films on your TV, it just may impact your experience when watching. Most of us watch everything on TV, and so ‘letterbox’ or 2.35:1 movies will display the bars and may be immune to even noticing it by now. However, some purists will prefer to properly frame the image and have the perfect TV for the movie dimensions without seeing any black bars will opt for a 2.35:1 projector screen to really capture the cinema essence intended when being filmed.

This is where a screen will be motorised to automatically adjust their display according to the aspect ratio or lens size used when creating the media.
