Sound design is one of the most powerful — and often least visible — elements of filmmaking.
In this conversation with Bryan Parker, Supervising Sound Editor on HBO Max’ The Pitt, we explore the “anatomy of sound design” — how audio shapes tension, realism and emotion inside one of television’s most intense medical dramas.
Bryan’s journey into film and television sound began in live music and the underground club scene before evolving into sound editing for major television productions.
This episode also held particular meaning for me. Having briefly trained in emergency medicine early in my medical career before becoming a family physician, the world portrayed in The Pitt resonates deeply — making this discussion a tribute to physicians and frontline healthcare professionals everywhere.
And a special shout out to ER Physician Dr. J Mack Slaughter Jr., M.D. for his wonderfully enthusiastic praise of the sound design featured in my introduction to the video.
A fascinating insight into the craft behind the sounds we often take for granted in film and television.
