Dedicated Home Cinema Room Design
A room built for one job, and designed so it does it properly.
A dedicated home cinema is a room built only for watching: dark, acoustically treated, with tiered seating, a projector and acoustically transparent screen and Dolby Atmos. Zebra designs the room, specifies the equipment and oversees the builder and installer. Our dedicated UK rooms, including garage and loft conversions, have cost £26,220 to £63,400 all in.
The difference between a good dedicated cinema and an expensive disappointment is decided on paper: room proportions, seat distances, screen size, speaker and subwoofer positions, isolation and treatment. Those decisions cost little before the builders start and a great deal after.
When a dedicated room is the right choice
- you have a room you can give over to it: a basement, garage, loft or spare room;
- you want the biggest picture and the most immersive sound the space allows;
- people sleep above or next to the room, so it needs isolating anyway;
- the budget is around £35,000 or more including the room work.
How we design it
Seat geometry first
Seat distance, screen width and the height of the riser decide whether the room feels like a cinema. We set them before anything else, then fit the screen and speakers to them.
Speakers behind the screen
An acoustically transparent screen lets the left, centre and right speakers sit behind the image, so sound comes from the picture. Several of our dedicated rooms, including both garage cinemas and the Loughborough snug, are built this way.
Isolation where it matters
A room within a room keeps bass out of bedrooms and neighbours. In Aldridge it stopped sound reaching the bedroom above and the spa next door.
Treatment and calibration, not just equipment
Fabric acoustic walls, bass management with more than one subwoofer and a calibrated finish are what make the equipment perform. They are designed in, not added at the end.

Frequently asked questions
How big does a dedicated home cinema room need to be?
A spare bedroom of 12–20 square metres can hold a small dedicated room with one row. A double garage of around 30–35 square metres comfortably fits two rows on a riser, a large screen and full acoustic treatment.
How much does a dedicated cinema room cost in the UK?
Our dedicated UK rooms have cost £26,220 to £63,400 all in, including building work where the room had to be created. Plan on about £35,000 or more if the room needs building work and full acoustic treatment.
Do I need soundproofing for a home cinema room?
If anyone sleeps above or beside the room, yes: isolation, usually a room within a room, is what stops bass travelling through the house. Acoustic treatment inside the room is different and every dedicated room needs it, because it controls how the room itself sounds.
Should the speakers go behind the screen?
In a dedicated room, usually yes. An acoustically transparent screen lets the front three speakers sit behind the picture so dialogue and effects come from the image, and it hides the speakers completely.
